Tenant Wins Compensation Over Shopping Centre Redevelopment Delays

Springwood Mall redevelopment mismanagement highlights risks for tenants

A Queensland tribunal has ordered the owners of Springwood Mall to pay $5,500 in compensation to a tenant after redevelopment delays severely impacted business operations. The landlord had promised completion by mid-2022, but works extended until December, disrupting access and customer flow. The Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) found the landlord misled the tenant in breach of the Retail Shop Leases Act 1994 (Qld).

Why it matters for businesses:

Delays and poor communication during shopping centre redevelopments can lead to legal disputes and financial losses. Professional defit and fit-out services help ensure clear timelines, compliance with lease laws, and reduced tenant risk.
